My Thoughts:

Secret Life of Copernicus H Stringfellow by Lorin Barber

This book was sent to my son for review, but I got to it before he did. :)   It’s about a guy name Copernicus H Stringfellow, “Nick”, who has chosen to use his life and moneys to do good for other people.  Also, he has super powers.

This books main character is 30, but the writing style and dialog lead me to believe the author had more an upper middle grade audience in mind.   It is very ‘smooth” and easy to read.   According to my reading updates on Goodreads, I also thought the book was very dialog heavy.  Which you find more in middle grade / young ya books.

This fun read follows Nick as he takes on a new job at a hospital and makes several new friends.  As we learn more about his secret “power”, we get to watch him fall in love, and root for him as several jealous coworkers hatch a plot to have him fired.  I loved that even though he had this “super power”, he was still very down to earth and respectful to others.  There was not a drop of arrogance to him, at all.  He is quick and witty – some of his comebacks/off the wall statements had me laughing out loud.   I kept picturing him as Benedict Cumberbatch from the UK’s Sherlock series – you know how Sherlock just says facts, and everyone is kind of shocked by his “bluntness”, and its just hilarious?  That’s how NICK is!

In Conclusion:

I got a real kick out of this book.  It was a fast, light read.  It had action, giggles, and a little mystery.  Fun stuff.  Even though the main character is 30, I could easily see someone say 11+ reading and thoroughly enjoying it.

Mom Notes:

*Excellent book for more advanced Middle Grade readers +.    Does contain a small amount of violence, as one expects, when there is a “super hero” involved. =D
