In My Mailbox July 17 2011
In My Mailbox is a weekly meme hosted by The Story Siren in which book bloggers share the books they’ve gotten in the past week.
HELLO. Hi there. How ya doin?
Sorry I have been m.i.a. lately, my health is not the best right now. My meds seem to be kicking in though, so hopefully this dizzy woozy sleeping haze will pass and I can get back on schedule with LIFE!
I know I didn’t post an IMM last week, so this is kind of two weeks worth of schtuff! So let’s get to it, shall we?
Just like last time, Im posting a LONG and a SHORT version. If you just want to see the titles – watch the short. If you want the descriptions and to hear me ramblin’ in all my hillbilly glory then watch the long. I’ll put all the info below for those of you who actually like to read and put some clickies for those that like to buy….
Ready?
On July 10th (I think) I received Pandora’s Succession by Russell Brooks for review.
Where would you hide if you learned the CDC and a major pharmaceutical company unleashed a hyperdeadly microbe on the human race? CIA operative, Ridley Fox, never stopped hunting his fiancée’s killers—a weapons consortium called The Arms of Ares. When an informant leads him to an old bunker outside of Groznyy, Chechnya, Fox is captured, beaten, and left for dead. When the informant rescues him, Fox learns that his capture was no coincidence: someone had set him up—possibly another government agent. Fox barely escapes after learning that Ares has acquired a hyperdeadly microbe—called Pandora—that is believed to have wiped out ancient civilizations. The trail leads Fox to Tokyo where he discovers that people within the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Japanese Intelligence want Pandora for themselves. The only person Fox can trust is a woman from his past who he nearly got killed.
I have started reading this but I am not very far into it yet, only about 60 some odd pages. Now that I am feeling better I am hoping I can stay awake long enough to actually GET INTO it! He does have a 5 chapter “teaser” up on his site: www.russellparkway.com so you should go check it out!
Then on July 11th, I received for review Blood Reaction: A Vampire Novel (Volume 1) By: DL Atha
Annalice, a single mother and physician, is ready to immerse herself in the mundane chores of her farm as a diversion from her hectic professional life.
But she becomes the victim of a home invasion, the supernatural kind. Vindictive and cruel, Asa, a century old vampire, takes brutal control of her life and home. Forcing her to strike a bargain in exchange for her daughter’s life, Annalice must not only accept his presence but also bow to his depravity. Facing threats to her only child, she relies on her skills as a physician to unravel the clues to the vampire’s existence attempting to beat him at his own game. Caught in a race against a genetic timeline, Annalice struggles to survive the Blood Reaction.
This one sounds really interesting! I can’t wait to pick it up, to see what it’s all about. Asa sounds mean and scary and I think I am going to love hating him!
That was what I got in for review. And then the books I ordered came in. Yes, yes. I broke my stupid book buying ban and bought some books. BUT BUT… In my defense. I “NEEDED THEM”! Atleast, that’s what I told Mr C. haha. Something tells me he didn’t buy it. Well, actually he did “BUY” it… but he wasn’t happy about it. haha, YAY, go me! haha!!
So purchases this week:
I got in 13 Treasures By: Michelle Harrison
Look how GORGEOUS this thing is. Not only is the cover TDF but holy crickets… look at the chapter headings!
Tanya is no ordinary girl. She can see fairies. But not the fairies we imagine. Evil fairies who cast spells on her, rousing her from her sleep and propelling her out of bed. At wit’s end with her daughter’s inexplicable behavior, Tanya’s mother sends her away to live with her grandmother at Elvesden Manor, a secluded countryside mansion on the outskirts of a peculiar Essex town. There is plenty to explore, as long as Tanya stays away from Hangman’s Wood- a vast stretch of forest, full of catacombs and notorious for people losing their lives. Fifty years ago a girl vanished in the woods, a girl Tanya’s grandmother will not speak of. As Tanya learns more about this girl, she finds herself dangerously close to vanishing into the fairy realm forever.Debut author Michelle Harrison weaves an intricate mystery into a beautiful and haunting fantasy that captures a rich world of fairy lore where only the color red can offer protection.
This is actually the FIRST in the 13 Treasures SERIES. I received 13 CURSES for review and when I realized it was a book two, I knew I’s gonna have’ta break my buying ban. I really wanted to read 13 CURSES and I hate reading a series out of order. SO…the solution… beg and bat eyelashes until Mr C realizes that I simply MUST HAVE the book (or HE is going to go crazy). haha.
The other book I purchased was Valiant By: Holly Black
Simon Pulse Trade Paperback with 374 pages – When seventeen year old Valerie runs away to New York City, she’s trying to escape a life that has utterly betrayed her. Sporting a new i.d. she takes up with a gang f squatters who live in the city’s labyrinthine subway system. When one person talks her into tracing down a lair of a mysterious creature with whom they all involved, Val finds herself torn between her newfound affection for an honorable monster and her fear of what her new friends are becoming.
This is the SECOND book in a series, and I actually got books ONE and THREE back in April. I put off reading them, because I wanted book two, and it has taken FOREVER to find the cover I wanted! This book has 3 or 4 different covers that I’ve seen but none of them are as stunning as this one!
Anyway, so now that I have the series, I am hoping to get them moved up in my TBR pile (or my F.I.R.L. as my friend Bumblesby calls it!)
So those were my purchases, not too bad. My Mr is still gloating that he won the bet, the one we made where I swore I wouldn’t buy ANY MORE BOOKS until I read some of what I had sitting around. Yeah, he totally won that one. haha!
And lastly: We come to my friend KC Hilton.
Not only did she send me an ARC of 90 Miles To Freedom
she sent me a super surprise!
Oh-MY-GOSH!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can I just say I got all teary eyed. I’m not kidding! I LOVE LOVE LOVE getting gifties, and being on my book buying ban had put me in some serious book withdrawal! And then out of no where, my friend, sends me these lovelies! SHUT UP! Are you KIDDING ME?!
