Bunnys_Mailbox

In My Mailbox is a weekly meme hosted by The Story Siren in which book bloggers share the books they’ve gotten in the past week.

We had a pretty big week bookwise in the Cates household!  So rather then do 3 seperate IMM posts, I’m  just going to stick them all in one.  Eventually, the kids will be posting their own so they wont be all combined.  Since this week was their firsts, I thought I would show them how to do them.  So, I hope you enjoy this weeks super long post. lol!!

First up:  For MY TWEEN READS – Bug’s first official IMM.

For Bug’s books this week there were both library borrows and bought books.

  1. Okay, the kids were ADORABLE! I love that they get involved and are readers, so that’s so great.
I liked the first 2 Darkest Powers book, but I haven’t read The Reckoning yet. Hope you like them. I’m dubious about the Cornelia Funke book because I have yet to read anything by her that doesn’t make me want to stab myself in the face. I think I’m giving up on her…

    1. @Misty @ The Book Rat, Thanks Misty! I’m proud of my kidlettes. They are both in the “Gifted and Talented” pools at their schools and do the academic teams and all that. I also love that they enjoy reading. But I tell you, finding material is not as easy as you would think! Like Bug is 4th grade but reads on a 7th grade aptitude level. We get her about 5 books a week at the library, and of course they are those tiny things for “kids” and she just blows through them all in a day. 🙁 She’s so young that books with boys and crushes etc are really a turn off for her. LOL… *throws meh hands up*

Im hoping the Darkest Powers books are good. I’ve been wanting some WITCHES lately. All the zombie stuff is really getting on my nerves, kwim?

Ohhhh… on Cornelia Funke. Misty. You didn’t like Inkheart?! *shakes head* tsk tsk. I just dont know if we can be friends now… LOL…

I’m kidding. I love your blog and that you like the darker more off beat books! All the other book bloggers are YA, so I felt like an odd ball since I really enjoy horror….

      THANKS for stopping by Misty!

      1. @BunnyCates, I haaaaaaaated Inkheart! It’s one of my least favorite books IN THE WORLD. I can’t help it.
I think part of it is that I had such high hopes for it. I love the concept and really wanted it to be good. My sister was in a book club through her middle school when it came out, and my mom and I went to the bc with her to help encourage reading and do something together. That book was the only book that nobody finished (except me).

I am a bit of an oddball, so you’re (I’m?) in good company. lol
I LOVED horror as a kid, though less now that I’m older (though I do like dark, just not necessarily horror, which I tend to laugh at…). I was in the same boat as your daughter. Only I read some really inappropriate things for my age group, so I can’t really help you there. Though that is the age I discovered the classics and fell in love, so maybe they’ll satisfy her. Anne of Green Gables, Little Men and Oliver Twist were particular faves at her age.
Also, unexpected “boy” books, like Hatchet and Confessions of Charlotte Doyle.

        1. @Misty @ The Book Rat,

I read horror as a kid too. I remember my favorite teacher (4th grade) constantly taking books away from me and calling my dad! haha!!!

Bug’s read Little Women already, and HATED IT. 🙁 Someone recommended the series called Boxcar Children which I hadn’t heard of and it looks like maybe it was from the 70’s or early 80’s. I guess I’ll get a couple of those for her and see. Someone gave me like books 1- like 120 of Sweet Valley High paper backs, and Bug will have no part of those. They have BOYS in them ya know. haha! I hadn’t thought about Oliver Twist! That’s a great idea!!

  2. I wasn’t a huge fan of Little Women at that age, either. Even now, even though I know it’s technically better, I still prefer Little Men, which I loved. It’s more fun and light hearted.
My mom was a big Boxcar Children fan, but they never did it for me.
Oh! I also loved the Little House books.
