In My Mailbox – March 26, 2011

In My Mailbox is a weekly meme hosted by The Story Siren in which book bloggers share the books they’ve gotten in the past week.

This has been a busy week for me life wise, and not really a busy week book wise. LOL!  So here’s what I picked up on a shopping trip to Evansville.

First, I ran into Borders to see if I could find any good bargains.  I have to say 30% off, Borders?  30% off to me is NOT a “Going out of business Everything must GO!” price.  That’s a “Week End Sale, stop by if you have some extra money” price.  Not only was I surprised that Borders was only doing 30% off, but I was shocked at how nonchalant and rude the employees were.  My visit went something like this…

Me: Hi, can you tell me where the YA section would be?

Clerk: *without looking up from filing her nails kind of points to the general direction of the middle of the store*

Me: oooo-kayyyy….  Can you tell me if you…

Clerk: *not letting me finish or even looking up* We don’t have access to our inventory anymore, if we have it its back there. *again aims with her nail file*

Me: Alrighty then…

lol.  I understand she doesn’t have to be excited, she’s already losing her job.  I get it, I really do, BUT… with that being said – I was still a potential customer.  My wallet deserves a little more respect than that. LOL!

Needless to say, I did not pick up anything at Borders Books in Evansville, IN.  I almost did.  They ALMOST got me.  They had the ENTIRE Cirque du Freak series by Darren Shan.  I WANT THAT SERIES!  30% off of 13 books was a little more than I want to drop, knowing I can bargain shop on Amazon.  As I was standing there handling the books trying to decide, the sales clerk stepped outside for a smoke.  Decision made, money saved.  THANKS RUDE SALES GIRL!

I walked out the door, passed Rude Sales Girl (she was smoking and talking on her cell).  I smiled ear to ear knowing I was fixing to go into my favorite place, a place where they appreciate a persons wallet, a place where they have time to look up a book.   Barnes and Noble!

What did I buy?  What did my wallet puke its contents out on the counter for??

IMM-3-26-2011

This week I picked up books I’ve been eyeballing for a few weeks.  Books everyone on the planet probably already has but me.  I’m new to YA so I don’t have many YA books.

*If you have read something YA you think I would love – TELL ME BELOW!!!*

So I got:

Beautiful Creatures

Published by: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers

Synopsis:

Lena Duchannes is unlike anyone the small Southern town of Gatlin has ever seen, and she’s struggling to conceal her power and a curse that has haunted her family for generations. But even within the overgrown gardens, murky swamps, and crumbling graveyards of the forgotten South, a secret cannot stay hidden forever.

Ethan Wate, who has been counting the months until he can escape from Gatlin, is haunted by dreams of a beautiful girl he has never met. When Lena moves into the town’s oldest and most infamous plantation, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her and determined to uncover the connection between them.
In a town with no surprises, one secret could change everything.

I cant wait to read this book!  I grabbed it thinking I would use it for book club next month, but now I’m thinking everyone has already read it. :(  What do you think, have you read it already?

Shouldn’t I choose books for book club I want to read, so I can find people who are interested in the same books I am, or should I be picking books because I think that will give me a big book club, no matter if I’m interested in the books or not?  I think I have to go with what I want to read and hope a couple of folks read with me.  That makes more sense, right?

Next I got the entire Mortal Instruments series.  =)

The reviews on this series look awesome so I had to grab them up!  I like that they are big fat juicy books, and the entire series is already out, so I don’t have to wait for an ‘ending’.  YAY!  And how bad ass are these covers? Shut UP!  Bad Ass I say!

Published by: Margaret K. McElderry
Synopsis:

When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder — much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Clary knows she should call the police, but it’s hard to explain a murder when the body disappears into thin air and the murderers are invisible to everyone but Clary.

Equally startled by her ability to see them, the murderers explain themselves as Shadowhunters: a secret tribe of warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. Within twenty-four hours, Clary’s mother disappears and Clary herself is almost killed by a grotesque demon.

But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know….

 City of Ashes (Mortal Instruments)

Published by: Margaret K. McElderry
Synopsis:

Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what’s normal when you’re a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and faeries? If Clary left the world of the Shadowhunters behind, it would mean more time with her best friend, Simon, who’s becoming more than a friend. But the Shadowhunting world isn’t ready to let her go — especially her handsome, infuriating, newfound brother, Jace. And Clary’s only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil — and also her father.
To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children. Is Valentine behind the killings — and if he is, what is he trying to do? When the second of the Mortal Instruments, the Soul-Sword, is stolen, the terrifying Inquisitor arrives to investigate and zooms right in on Jace. How can Clary stop Valentine if Jace is willing to betray everything he believes in to help their father?
In this breathtaking sequel to City of Bones, Cassandra Clare lures her readers back into the dark grip of New York City’s Downworld, where love is never safe and power becomes the deadliest temptation.

 City of Glass (Mortal Instruments)

Published by: Margaret K. McElderry

Synopsis:

To save her mother’s life, Clary must travel to the City of Glass, the ancestral home of the Shadowhunters — never mind that entering the city without permission is against the Law, and breaking the Law could mean death. To make things worse, she learns that Jace does not want her there, and her best friend, Simon, has been thrown in prison by the Shadowhunters, who are deeply suspicious of a vampire who can withstand sunlight.

As Clary uncovers more about her family’s past, she finds an ally in mysterious Shadowhunter Sebastian. With Valentine mustering the full force of his power to destroy all Shadowhunters forever, their only chance to defeat him is to fight alongside their eternal enemies. But can Downworlders and Shadowhunters put aside their hatred to work together? While Jace realizes exactly how much he’s willing to risk for Clary, can she harness her newfound powers to help save the Glass City — whatever the cost?

Love is a mortal sin and the secrets of the past prove deadly as Clary and Jace face down Valentine in the final installment of the New York Times bestselling The Mortal Instruments.
